· Guest Speaker- The guest speaker was Larry Scott, Putnam County Highway engineer and acting highway superintendent. (The new highway superintendent Roger Deck will start in July). He spoke regarding the high degree of disrepair to the Putnam County roads and bridges. There are 220 bridges and 4000 culverts (a bridge less than 20 ft long) in Putnam County. In Indiana, Putnam County ranks 5th as the county with the largest number of bridges. 119 of these bridges needs replaced now. Putnam County is number 5 on the list of counties with the worst bridges. Our lower population makes it difficult to generate the fund for bridges. It would cost 32 million dollars to replace these bridges. At the current rate of 24 cents per $100 dollars accessed or $750,000 it would take 40 years to do the needed replacements. The rates needed to replace these bridges were lowered during the depression era and never brought back to the needed levels. Without these bridges, we will all suffer. Fire protection, ambulances and other critical services depend on the bridges. Another problem involves our county roads. There are over 400 miles of county roads. A great deal of freeze thaw damage occurred this last winter. 60 million dollars worth of repairs are needed. The Putnam County allocation from the State of Indiana for these repairs has been lowered from $800,000 to $400,000. Some ways the County saves money is by making there own cold mix to repair potholes as well as in house designing of some of the bridges.

The next meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. Monday July, 22nd 2001 at the Dave Johnson's. Until next meeting Bite'em.
