Our November meeting took place on the 24th at the Cloverdale Middle School, and we were treated to an excellent Thanksgiving feast by the cafeteria staff. The meeting was called to order by President Ray Baker, and then he welcomed Mr. Terry Enlow, Cloverdale’s new school superintendent, as our speaker for the evening. NOTE: There was no meeting in December.
OLD BUSINESS
>DUES---We still have two members that owe dues for last year. We have started collecting dues for 2004. A vote was taken to raise the annual dues to $42.00 a year to cover the International and State dues. The local clubs are required by the bylaws to do that.
>CHRISTMAS BANNERS-Ray thanked the crew who helped put up the Christmas banners along US231 this year. They included Larry Haltom, Ed Truax, Bill Terrill, Dave Johnson and Todd, Sarah and Jenna Lewis. They were up just in time for the annual Christmas parade!

ENTERTAINMENT-President Ray introduced Terry Enlow, and he mentioned how the school and Lions Club have teamed on many great projects over the years including post proms, scoreboards, scholarships, band uniforms, eye exams and glasses for children and many other things. Mr. Enlow first introduced himself. Some of the highlights include: 33 years in education, high school basketball coach for 15 years, Athletic Director, Principal at elementary level for 12 years, Superintendent at Orleans for 7 years, and his family is from the Patoka Lake area. He highlighted a lot of the funding issues the schools face today, especially regarding unfunded mandates the state government has been passing. One of the biggest issues concerns an unfunded liability of the pension and severance pay, which will hopefully be addressed with the selling of bonds. He also stressed that the local school has to have more of a marketing approach to keep the community’s support. As he put it, the school has to be ‘more customer friendly.’ He also discussed the importance the state has put on ISTEP scores, saying the funding will be based on the test results and it could very well lead into consolidation of school systems across the state if schools can’t perform. He mentioned that no one likes to ‘teach the test’, but that is what the state is forcing schools to do, instead of letting them actually educate the children.
