Our January 2010 meeting took place on the 25th at the First National Bank Operations Building.  The meeting was called to order by Secretary Todd Lewis. He introduced our special guests for the evening, Sherry McCracken of the Census Bureau.

NEXT MEETING-MONDAY, February 22 at 7:00PM at the First National Bank—Please plan to attend!

>Year End- We ended the year with a $519 deficit.  James McKee reported that was still a pretty good year considering our income was down due to several issues at Speedway, and we had a couple of last minute expenses (including helping 3 families with very nice Christmas food baskets).  We still have a good balance in the bank, and we served our community well in 2009!

>DUES- 2010 dues are now due if you haven’t paid them already.

>Referral-We received a call for help for a teenager needing an eye exam to get a new prescription for contacts.  We contacted Poland Lions and they are not offering this yet, so we took care of it.  Dr. Petry donated the fitting(Approx. $125 value), and we paid for the exam only.

>Thank Yous-We received a thank you from Cloverdale Main Street for our help with the carriage rides during the Christmas season.  Michelle Zimmerman led the way, and Charity Aton, Charlie Simon, Norv Gottula and James McKee pitched in as well.  Michelle reported there were over 200 people that took rides and they were lined up all night long.  As far as suggestions for Main Street next year, we discussed helping with a donation to get a 2nd carriage, and having them get with Eric Hayman or the Fire Dept to get some better lighting in the wait area. Thanks to all that helped!

>Christmas Banners-Thankfully, Endeavor put them up this year, but they didn’t use zippy strips, so they lost about 4 of them.  Main Street contacted our very own Larry Haltom to tighten them all up---Thanks LARRY!

>Christmas Baskets-Jimmy Dean did a great job taking care of the 2 families that we were given names of by the school.  Charlie Simon helped him out on this project.  Along the way, Jimmy was contacted by another family requesting aid, so Todd Lewis was able to put together another basket from the Lions Club with donations from First National Bank, Todd’s family, and some help from the Lions Club.

>Christmas Parade Food Booth-Mike Buis again prepared some great chili and Jeff Rich helped us by letting us in his business to store stuff and use the electricity. First National Bank donated the paper supplies. We made approximately $66 and got some good PR.  Jeff offered to let us move inside next year, but we would need to discuss visibility and traffic issues???  Most of the club felt this would not be a good move because we would be a lot less visible. Ideas discussed for next year were to forget the booth and serve coffee and hot chocolate to the people in the parade while they are waiting----we would need to make sure we are well marked as being LIONS CLUB members—Lions even have Styrofoam cups that are $6.95 for 50 of them—it will cost us a little, but would be great PR.  Michelle noted that most of the town of Cloverdale is actually in the parade, so it would be great visibility.  Of course, we would need to get Main Street’s OK.

>Speedway-We have to let them know if we are interested in running a booth by February.  Staffing issues for both qualification days were discussed, but the club decided that we could staff it properly, so Todd will send it the paperwork.

>Budget-James presented a new one and it was approved.  We scaled back on some expenses, including the sponsorship of the Youth Football.  Todd will call them and let them know. It was discussed that no one really heard anything on the street about that project.  We believe we will actually be able to make a little more money at the track with the changes they have made.

>Shirts/Hats-Michelle volunteered to check into prices on shirts/hats at the local shop. Thanks for doing that Michelle!

>Lions Presentations-We received a new banner patch for membership growth, and Todd also presented a pin to Charlie Simon for membership growth.  WAY TO GO CHARLIE!

>Photoscreening-Ray Baker is going to check with the school and Head Start to see if they are interested.  Michelle felt confident that the Methodist daycare would participate again.

>Elections-Would like to do in March—no later than April—so be thinking!  We will be getting with the nomination committee to get going.

>Cloverdale Lions History Hunt- Dave Johnson organized many of the old records and Todd will try to scan some in and see what happens.  Thanks Dave!

>CALENDAR FOR MEETINGS—The calendar for 2010 meetings was presented and discussed.

>Potential Fundraisers/Projects-We discussed several potential fundraisers and projects for 2010.  Some of the ideas and the folks that are following up with them are as follows:   James McKee-Chili Cookoff?  Michelle Zimmerman-Town Party at Park?  Jimmy Dean-3 on 3 Basketball?  Todd Lewis-Golf Outing?

>WalMart Eyeglass Recycling—Todd shared an email that he received regarding WalMart partnering with the Lions Club to collect glasses.  This should be great PR and should get a lot more glasses!

>Entertainment-Sherry McCraken gave an interesting presentation on the Census and their local need for workers.  She is trying to recruit over 40 people in the Cloverdale area alone. It is a temporary job but pays $12 to $12.50, and it is possible to get up to 40 hours a week.  The hours are flexible and it should begin in March with a 4 day training. Sherry shared the application with us, and discussed the testing.  If anyone is interested, please contact her at 721-5455.  She offered to present the test after the meeting.
